July 2003

For those of you who purchased RNIB raffle tickets from me on Malcolm's BBQ night - a big thankyou. The RNIB Summer Prize Raffle Draw was supposed to take place on 27 June 2003 and the results were to have been published on their website from 4 July 2003. I checked on the 6th July and they haven't been posted. Those who would like to check for themselves can go to www.rnib.org.uk/youhelp/regdraw .

As it's only a short time until the AGM could I request that should you wish to nominate anyone for the Committee, please do so post haste using the Nomination Form included towards the back of this Tappits. Please note they should be returned to Maureen by the 12th July so if you are one of the fifty or so coming to the BBQ at Peter and Marion's house, you could hand it over then.

By the way for those of you going to the BBQ - the time is 6.30 to 7.00pm and I'll try to make sure the entrance to Peter's is arrowed. Can I also remind those of you who haven't paid that Dave Pope and myself will be emptying your wallet on the night. ( £6 per adult and half price for those under 8 ).

I recently had the great pleasure of going with Ian Wright to the old 1960's Grand Prix Circuit at Montlhery to the south of Paris. As I said in the June Editorial we were both hoping the weather would be dry although I know Ian prefers the wet when actually racing as it gives him a good advantage over many of the FISC competitors. With temperatures in the high 90's at times it wasn't easy to feel comfortable however the FISC free issue soft drinks and beer did help.

Ian's Midget was running beautifully - better than any other time I've been with Ian. But Montlhery is an old 1920's Brooklands type banked circuit and due to it's ever worsening state of construction, all the cars there that weekend took a massive pounding. Inevitably things get stressed …….. but I will say no more on the subject as Ian will be adding his full tale in Tappits very soon. We had the pleasure of meeting up with Pete Lythell, his partner and her daughter at the circuit. He'd contacted me via email after reading Tappits, so a quick reply gave him details of what to look out for. I don't usually see Peter when he's over but we do have quite a historical link or two. Not sure if Peter fancies joining Ian, who'll be accompanied by Roy Johnson on his next trip, as it's a fair old hike to Clermont Ferrand on 25th/27th July. If you do Peter - let me know and we'll forward the details. It would make a nice weekend break and after all it's a lot nearer for you.

Finally …..as mentioned last month we have been invited to attend the Gainsborough Festival of Transport again on Saturday 13th September to Queen Elizabeth's High School. I'm trying to negotiate a slot for the Club to do a demonstration Autotest on their school field. If you are interested in coming along let me or Dave James know ASAP.
