June 2006
Well, we've hardly got going with the summer events calendar and already it's only a week before the days start shortening. Just thought I'd 'lob' that one in to cheer you all up.
Treasure hunts are an ever popular feature of the summer calendar, our first of the season ran last week and was particularly well supported with thirteen crews turning out for another of Nicky Huntridge's excellent offerings.
The mainstay though of our summer sport calendar is the autotest series and unfortunately, due to loss of the Thorpe Marsh venue we haven't been able to run one yet. So, if anyone reading knows of a potential venue, please talk to Comp' Sec' David Wilson or any member of the club committee.
One date for your diary is 19-July - the club AGM. Aimed at streamlining the running of the meeting, the committee will this year extend into the AGM its monthly committee practice requiring items for 'Any Other Business' to be declared in advance. Please submit your items to chairman Len no later than Wednesday 5th July.
Page 3 is the 2nd and final part of Nicky's New Zealand holiday. It must be catching, because this month, your Chairman has included an entertaining account of his recent travels. This all brings to mind my once in a lifetime holiday to Perth, Western Australia in November 2000. Everywhere were posters about the Telstra Rally Australia. The 'Super Special' was set up on an old world war II airstrip about half a mile from the hotel, with the banks of the Swan river on one side and overlooked by the sky scrapers of the city on the other. I'd been out of touch with the world rally scene for years but couldn't pass on the chance to have a look. The stage included a man-made 'yump and was superbly set up. There was grandstand seating all the way around and loads of family entertainment in the hour before the action, which was terrific, with Colin McRea in the Focus and Richard Burns both at the peak of their powers. Best thing though was watching it all in the 'balmy' evening air of November.
Perhaps you have a holiday story to tell. If you do, let's hear it.
